Dextero Tires Review: Walmart’s Giti-Built Budget Brand, Explained

Dextero is the tire brand you find at Walmart, often priced well below the national names on the same rack. That makes it an obvious choice for budget-minded drivers, and an obvious question: what exactly are you buying, and what can you verify about it?

How this review was put together: We have not road-tested Dextero tires. This review is based on trade coverage, retailer listings and one published owner account, with sources listed at the end. An earlier version of this page said Dextero dates to 1965 in Akron, Ohio, and cited independent test results and product lines we could not verify; the page has been rewritten around what we could confirm. Checked on October 22, 2026.

Who Makes Dextero Tires?

Dextero is a brand of Giti Tire, a Singapore-based manufacturer that has made tires since 1951 and also sells the GT Radial and Primewell brands. According to SlashGear, Dextero was founded in 2011 in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and most Dextero tires sold in the US are built at Giti’s plant in Chester County, South Carolina, which opened in 2017, with a smaller share from plants in Indonesia and China.

Dextero tires are sold through Walmart. Giti’s relationship with the retailer is long-standing: Walmart named Giti its Automotive Supplier of the Year for 2015, and Modern Tire Dealer’s coverage of that award described the Dextero DHT2 as a light truck tire Giti supplies to Walmart’s auto centers.

The Dextero Lineup

Dextero keeps a small range focused on the tires Walmart shoppers buy most.

Warranty terms and sizes vary by model, so check the listing for your exact size before buying.

How Dextero Tires Perform

We found no independent instrumented tests of current Dextero models, so treat any claim about braking distances or wet grip with caution. The most detailed published account we found is from The Autopian’s David Tracy, who bought a set of Dextero All Terrain DAT1 tires for about $80 each. He found them surprisingly decent on dry pavement and off-road, with good noise and ride comfort, strong grip on dirt and rocks when aired down, and normal-looking wear after about 5,000 miles. The drawback he noted was lug damage on off-road trips. He had driven them only on dry roads.

That is one owner’s experience, not a test, but it matches what you would expect from a budget tire built by a large manufacturer: fine for everyday use, without the refinement or proven performance of premium tires.

Treadwear and Warranty

The DTR1’s listed 45,000-mile tread life warranty is well below the 65,000 to 80,000 miles common on mainstream touring tires. If tread life matters most to you, compare the cost per warranted mile rather than the sticker price. Keep rotation records, since treadwear claims usually require them, and handle warranty questions through Walmart’s auto center.

Price and Value

Price is Dextero’s main appeal. The DAT1 at around $80 a tire is a fraction of what premium all-terrain tires cost. For drivers who need dependable tires for commuting or light trail use and don’t want to spend more, that can be a sensible trade. Drivers who log high mileage, face real winters or want proven wet braking should look at tires with published test results and longer warranties.

Pros

  • Low prices at Walmart
  • Built by Giti, a large established manufacturer
  • Mostly made in South Carolina

Cons

  • Shorter mileage warranties than mainstream touring tires
  • No independent test data we could find
  • Limited model range and sold mainly through one retailer

How Dextero Compares With Other Budget Brands

Warranty and price figures below come from retailer listings checked in October 2026.

Budget touring tireTreadwear warrantyPrice (October 2026)
Blackhawk Street-H HH1150,000 milesFrom about $38 (Giga Tires)

Primewell PS890 Touring70,000 miles (non-staggered)Sold at SimpleTire

Dextero’s listed 45,000-mile warranty matches Westlake and Leao but trails Kelly and Primewell. Its advantage is convenience: you can buy and install it at the same Walmart auto center.

Buying and Installing Dextero Tires at Walmart

Walmart’s installation package has been reported at about $18 per tire and includes mounting, a valve stem or TPMS service pack, lifetime balance and rotation, and a lug re-torque, according to a Clark.com pricing guide updated in December 2025. Walmart’s optional road hazard warranty has been reported at about $10 per tire. Prices vary by store, so confirm at checkout. Our guide to the Walmart tire return policy explains how warranty claims work there.

How to Buy Budget Tires Wisely

  • Read the DOT date code. The last four digits show the week and year of manufacture; avoid tires that have sat in a warehouse for years.
  • Compare UTQG grades within a brand and look for A or AA traction and A temperature grades.
  • Price the warranty, not just the tire. Divide the price by the warranted miles to compare cost per mile.
  • Keep the paperwork. Budget warranties are prorated and usually require the receipt and rotation records.
